Cordon Rouge:

vegetarian and vegan recipes from the Red Herring

A5 paperback, sewn binding, 176 pages, illustrated with 11 black and white photographs, 7 full colour photographs, 16 black and white drawings and other illustrations, 1 illustration in full colour

The Red Herring Workers’ Co-operative for many years ran a cafe and shop in Newcastle upon Tyne from where they sold wonderful vegetarian and vegan food including organic and speciality breads, pastries and cakes. Cordon Rouge contains a selection of their most popular recipes and describes some of the highlights of the first ten years. These include constructing their own bakery and brick-built coke-fired oven and publishing a book of Latin American recipes.

Cordon Rouge contains over 120 recipes, about half of which are vegan, as well as helpful hints and notes on ingredients. Published to celebrate the cafe’s tenth anniversary, it includes accounts of how the Red Herring came into being and anecdotes from the members of the Co-operative. The Red Herring Cafe and Shop closed in 1998.
